Research and creative activity are at the heart of graduate study in English. Graduate students in English Department programs will develop their own scholarly and/or creative works under the supervision of highly respected faculty. Residential graduate students can gain editing experience with our literary journals.
New Ohio Review is a nationally recognized literary journal featuring fiction, poetry, nonfiction, features, and interviews published by ɫߣߣ×ۺϵ¼º½'s English Department.
The assistant editor position is available to Creative Writing Ph.D. students, as are reader positions.
Sphere Magazine is ɫߣߣ×ۺϵ¼º½'s only undergraduate literary magazine, publishing student fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and art. The student organization is run by students, for students.
A graduate assistant works with undergraduate editors and staff as needed on production and fundraising.
The Master's Essay entails a minimum of 25 pages of scholarly or critical writing, modeled on the academic journal article. It's an option for all M.A. concentrations except Creative Writing, where the thesis is required.
A master's thesis is mandatory for Creative Writing, and it's an option for Literary History and Rhetoric & Composition concentrations.
The main criterion for the dissertation is quality, not quantity. Students are encouraged to plan dissertations that are original, significant, and, ideally, publishable.
