Honors Tutorial College Program

Mathematics Major

The Honors Tutorial College program in mathematics offers exceptional students the opportunity to pursue advanced undergraduate study through intensive, individualized tutorials with mathematics faculty. The program emphasizes abstract quantitative thinking, rigorous proof-based reasoning, and independent research, allowing students to progress well beyond the material typically covered in conventional coursework.

Curriculum

Students must complete at least 120 credit hours, maintain a minimum GPA of 3.5, and fulfill all university and Honors Tutorial College requirements.

All entering students complete a first-year seminar during their first two semesters, designed to introduce mathematics as abstract quantitative thinking. Students who have not completed calculus prior to enrollment complete it through a regular calculus course.

Honors Tutorial and Thesis

Following the first year, students’ primary mathematical work takes place through tutorials — regularly scheduled, one-on-one instructional sessions with a faculty tutor focused on a specific topic area.

Students complete eight tutorials within the mathematics program, including two senior-year tutorials devoted to an undergraduate honors thesis. The thesis must demonstrate original mathematical research and is submitted and defended in accordance with Honors Tutorial College requirements. Each student must also pass comprehensive examinations in the required areas of study.

There is no fixed distribution of credit hours among tutorials; each student’s program is individually planned to ensure appropriate depth and progress.

Career Opportunities

The Honors Tutorial College mathematics program is designed primarily as preparation for graduate study in mathematics or closely related fields.

Graduates also pursue careers in academia, business, finance, data analysis, research, law, medicine, and other professions that require advanced quantitative reasoning, analytical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
